The Structural Steel Division of E.S. Fox Limited manages both the fabrication and field erection of structural steel systems for new construction. The division also specializes in “niche” structural systems used for pedestrian, rail, and transportation bridges outside the typical Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional work we do. AESS requires much  more care in handling and pre-planning, lifting points, lugs, or devices are all looked at ahead of time. Every step must be planned from the time deliveries arrive. E.S. Yukon Striker

Client: Canada’s Wonderland

Location: Vaughan, Ontario

Trades: Ironworkers

Engineer: Bolliger & Mabillard

The contract was for the offloading and assembly of components and erection only of a new roller coaster. This include all the station members, transfer station, columns, track elements, setting of equipment and the trains (to accommodate the guests). There were many unique challenges with this Roller Coaster due to the logistically sensitive and congested site. Many complex erection challenges were overcome and at some points (4) cranes were simultaneously used. It is the largest dive coaster in the world. It has an overall drop of 245’ (with a 90 degree drop), reaches 80mph and is 3,625’ long.

Rainy River Project

Client: Newgold Inc.

Location: Emo, Ontario

Engineer: AMEC Foster Wheeler

The first project was for the supply and installation of structural steel and miscellaneous metals for a new industrial building at the site of the Rainy River Gold Mine near Emo, ON. We have also subcontracted cladding, roofing, grouting, metal deck, man doors, overhead doors and windows. Overall weight of structural steel was in excess of 6,000 tons, excluding miscellaneous metals. Additional work included the erection of fifteen (15) prefabricated structural steel frames c/w equipment, mechanical and electrical services in them. The second project (MPEI Contract 015 Crusher Building) involved the successful completion of all electrical and mechanical work associated with the grinding building including the installation of all major owner supplied equipment such as the Ball and Sag Mills, Pebble Crusher, Pre-Leach Thickener, Concentrator, Screens, Conveyor systems, Cyclopack, Transformers, MCC’s, Modular Electrical rooms, Intensive Cyanidization Unit (ICU), Process Pumps, Wet Scrubber Cyclone, and associated electrical works.

All Project Management, cost control, safety, scheduling and quality control was performed by the site project team and supported by our Thunder Bay and Niagara offices. This was a remote project that required an owner provided camp to accommodate the workforce. As there was no permanent power, ESFL had to supply and maintain generators and a temporary power grid for the offices, warehousing and worksite. Due to the remote location there were challenging communication issues as well as transportation and storage and deliveries of components which also posed challenges that were recognized and addressed.

Halton Hills Generating Systems Modular Utility Racks

Client: Cherubini Metal Works Ltd.

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Trades: Ironworkers

Engineer: Entuitive

Our Subcontract was for the erection only of (4) new spans (one pictured). The project was developed to reconfigure the Don River run off to facilitate new wetlands and a path for the river to follow, in addition to flood protection for the area.

The (4) spans ranging in weight from 525 tons to 1280 tons were placed as single structures from barges to their associated abutments. The structures were shipped from the Fabricator in Nova Scotia, transported to site via the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes to site. The structures arrived on custom site-specific turntables located on the barges, rotated on the barge and ballasted into place. Some of the spans are to be rolled off the barge with SPMT trailers and transported to their final position using the SPMT trailers. The lightest bridge is 525 tons, and the heaviest is 2,600 tons split into 2 halves at 1,280 tons each.

E.S. Fox Limited Limited secured the contract for the erection only of structural steel to add 13 floors of steel onto a 31 story concrete framed Condominium. Fox utilized the site tower crane for all hoisting requirements

Bay of Quinte Bridge

Client: Aecon Construction

Location: Kingston, Ontario

Trades: Ironworkers

Engineer: McIntosh Perr

The scope of work includes for the installation only of new plate girders to replace the entire existing bridge in phases over the period of 5 years (multiple phases per year). This is required to keep the bridge open during construction. The majority of the erection work will utilize cranes placed on multiple barges for hoisting purposes. In addition the scope includes structural steel repair work to the existing bridge to prevent further stress cracking at the web/stiffener interface.
